|
| |
President Ahmadinejad; New York City
This event with President Ahmadinejad brought together members of the academic, business, diplomatic and national/international media communities. President Ahmadinejad conducted a discussion in which participants expressed their concerns and thoughts as to the U.S.-Iran relationship. The President listened and then responded to every participant's concerns. While not every participant received an answer that he or she may have felt was fully complete, the general consensus was that President Ahmadinejad was more direct and forthcoming than at any other occasion in the U.S. Both the American and the Iranian participants were, on the whole, very pleased at the exchange of ideas. The meeting lasted nearly 3 hours. More to follow... |

Senator Chuck Hagel’s principled speech against the Iran-Libya Sanctions Act (ILSA) inspired a lively and timely debate on the sanction legislation. The Senator was also the only dissenting voice in the Senate vote on the Act. The speech and the vote failed to convince the ILSA supporters: it was passed. But as the Senator had warned, the unenforceable legislation was shelved, damaging US international credibility. (9.)

Seizing An Historic Opportunity : Breaking Through the US-Iran Impasse
This AIC forum was a tremendous success. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s speech was a milestone for the AIC and the nation of Iran . With her words, a US Secretary of State for the first time, directly expressed regret, and extended an implicit apology to Iran for the past “misguided” and “short-sighted” policies of the United States, including the 1953 coup against Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh, support for the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s dictatorship, and the help to Iraq for its war against Iran. Secretary Albright also lifted sanctions against Iranian carpets, caviar and pistachios. (Years later, leaders of the Islamic Republic acknowledged with regret that they had indeed missed an historic opportunity to mend relations with the United States .) (5.) |

Revisiting US-Iran Relations
In his inspiring new speech, the late Cyrus Vance reminded the new generation of American leaders of Iran 's enormous strategic significance and economic potential, its contributions to civilization, the vitality of its cultural heritage, and the hospitality and generosity of its people. He noted the "lack of diplomatic relations, often between countries at conflict, even at war, is the abnormal, not the norm." He called for the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

This conference aimed at beginning a dialogue for better understanding between Iran and the U.S. . Distinguished scholars and policy analysts provided important insights into US-Iran relations. The participants agreed that Iran was too important a country for the US to ignore in formulating its Middle East foreign policy. There was a consensus that Tehran and Washington should resolve their differences before a potential spiral conflict grew of control.
