October 23 (upcoming): PBS Frontline will be airing Showdown With Iran
on October 23, 2007. This program will be of great interest and
importance to those seeking a better understanding of the
American-Iranian relationship. The AIC's work to help bring the U.S.
and Iran together by means of the "Grand Bargain" proposal is featured
in this documentary. Documents used by Mr. Nicholas Kristof of the New
York Times and the PBS Frontline team may be found on this site (documents in pdf format). Frontline has released a preview of the special. The AIC helped organize an important event for President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad on September 25th, when he was in New York City, for a speech
at the UN General Assembly meetings. Participants, about 60, included
leaders from the media, business executives, academics, experts from
major think tanks, and several former American officials. The President
was accompanied by several high-raking officials from the Islamic
Republic. The format allowed the participants to make comments and ask
questions. President Ahmadinejad thenfollowed by making a statement and
answering to the quetions. The meeting , planned for 90 minutes, lasted
three hours. AIC will have a major report on the meeting in the next issue, Update 62. WELCOME HOME, MR. ALI SHAKERI

October 15: Mr. Ali Shakeri
has now returned to the United States. His health seems to have held up to the rigors of confinement and he seems to be reasonably well and in good spirits. Mr.
Ali Shakeri, of the UCI Center for International Studies in Irvine,
California, called the AIC on Tuesday, October 2nd, to thank
those at the AIC for diplomatic
actions taken to help with his release from prison in Iran. Mr. Shakeri
appeared in a court on October 3rd for a judical hearing involving his
return to the U.S. Mr. Shakeri will return to Iran when necessary in order to meet the conditions of the judicial arrangement.
The AIC is extremely proud of Mr. Shakeri and is pleased that he has returned safely. Mr. Shakeri has worked with
and in support of the AIC for many years (e.g., see his article Iraq in U.S.-Iranian Relations). Upon this return, Mr. Shakeri will be invited by the AIC for an event honoring his homecoming. We invite everyone to send
Ali a very warm and personal - "Welcome home!". Everyone at the AIC sends Mr.
Shakeri and his family our best wishes. | IRAN AND NUCLEAR GEOPOLITICS IN THE MIDDLE-EAST
Dr. Hooshang Amirahmadi: Iran is often said to live in a “dangerous
neighborhood” and because of this geography, the country intends to build
nuclear bombs for security purpose. This
suspicion is hardened given that Iran is, seemingly, an energy-rich country. Yet,
a more productive application of the “dangerous neighborhood” concept would
have been to use it for a deeper appreciation of Iran’s security concerns. Indeed, it is critical that Iran’s nuclear
ambition is considered in the context of the regional nuclear geopolitical
situation. Nuclear geopolitics is a new concept
and I believe placing Iran’s nuclear programs in that context can help with a
more realistic assessment of its purpose and future direction. (Read More)

Although the U.S. and Iran continue to test one another on various fronts, both countries are also moving toward increased dialogue. The two key points upon which the U.S. continues to put pressure upon Iran involve Iran's quest for nuclear enrichment and the Iraq war.
Iran's Nuclear Enrichment Activities Iran has been steadfast and unmoving in their claim that their nuclear enrichment is solely for energy and peacful purposes. The rest of the world has remained unconvinced and suspicious of the true intent of Iran's nuclear enrichment goals. Hersh Unfolds War Plans Against Iran, Press TV
